AFL EXTENDS SEASON TO 18 GAMES FOR 2011 SEASON Posted: 8/30/2010 2:01:51 PM
The 2011 Arena Football League regular season has been extended by two games Commissioner Jerry Kurz announced today. The change was passed in ownership meetings last week in Phoenix, AZ.
“There has never been a better time for the Arena Football League,” said Commissioner Kurz. “The product is exciting, our economic model is sound and fans are demanding affordable family entertainment. Extending our season is a great decision, both from a business and fan perspective.”
The AFL has grown from 15 teams to 19 teams for the 2011 season with the additions of Kansas City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Jose. All four markets have had AFL teams in the past.
Talons season tickets are now on sale for the 2011 season starting as low as $90. Contact the Talons office at 294-1000 for more information.
TALONS PLACE 5 PLAYERS ON ALL-AFL TEAMS Posted: 8/20/2010 1:11:22 PM
The Tulsa Talons placed five players on the All-AFL first and second teams combined the league office announced today. The Talons along with Chicago and Tampa Bay had the most players represented.
Making the 1st team for the Talons were defensive end Gabe Nyenhuis, wide receiver Donovan Morgan and mac linebacker Steve Watson. The Talons were represented on the 2nd team by jack linebacker Jamar Ransom and fullback Ogie Armstrong.
Gabe Nyenhuis: Nyenhuis, a three year vet in the AFL had one of the best defensive seasons in league history. Nyenhuis led the AFL in sacks with 15.5 (a new AFL record), tackles for a loss with 13 and forced fumbles with 9. His relentless pursuit of the opposing teams’ quarterbacks helped the Talons defense steadily improve during the season. Nyenhuis was also named the Lineman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year earlier this week.
Donovan Morgan: Morgan led a talented wider receiving corps which saw all three receivers finish with more than 1,000 yards receiving (1st time in franchise history). He finished the season with 123 catches for 1,707 yards and 52 touchdowns. Morgan’s 52 receiving touchdowns were the best in the AFL.
Steve Watson: Watson along with Jamar Ransom made up one of the best, if not the best, linebacker corps in the AFL. Watson led all Mac linebackers with 69 tackles (42 were solo tackles) and finished the season with 6.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 2 pass break ups.
Jamar Ransom: Ransom led all Jack linebackers with 92 tackles (58 solo tackles) and had 6 interceptions on the season for 57 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 1 forced fumble and 9 pass break ups. Ransom is known for his speed and pursuit of the ball on defense, but he also contributed on offense with 4 touchdowns (2 receiving and 2 rushing), giving him a total of 6 touchdowns on the season.
Odie Armstrong: Armstrong, considered one of the best blocking fullbacks in the league, led the AFL in yards per carry (4.7) and rushing yards with 349. He also had 11 catches on the season for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns giving him 15 total touchdowns.

TALONS SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO TAMPA BAY Posted: 8/9/2010 10:03:26 AM
TULSA, OK – The inaugural AFL season for the Tulsa Talons ended Saturday night at the BOK Center in a crushing loss to the AFL veteran Tampa Bay Storm 68-38. It was one of those nights for the Talons where almost nothing went right and nearly everything was perfect for the Storm. The Talons drew first blood scoring on their first drive just two minutes into the game. Justin Allgood completed a touchdown pass to Donovan Morgan right in front of the Tulsa bench. However, Tampa Bay rattled off 20 unanswered points and did not look back en route to the victory.
The closest Tulsa came to the Tampa Bay was 20-13 on another Allgood touchdown pass to Morgan in the middle of the second quarter. From that point, the Storm cruised into halftime on a 14-6 run on a pair of Brett Dietz passes to Sedrick Robinson. The first half closed seeing Allgood complete just nine of 22 passes for three touchdowns, while his counterpart, Dietz, completed 12 of 17 passes for four scores. Storm utility man Eric Ortiz and wide receiver Tyrone Timmons accounted for the other Storm touchdowns on a 3 yard run and an 8 yard catch, respectively. The Talons went into the half down 34-19.
Tampa Bay set the tone for the second half opening with a five minute drive culminating in Timmons’ second of three touchdown catches. This score put the Storm up by 21 points, Tulsa continued to fight as they answered back on another connection between Allgood and Morgan for six. Similar to the first half, though, the visitors scored 21 points in succession, putting the game out of reach for the Talons. Tulsa could not get anything going in the final stanza of the game as time ran out on their season.
From beginning to end, nothing went Tulsa’s way. Tampa Bay’s pressure forced Allgood to hurry his passes as he completed 20 on 43 attempts for six touchdowns in the game. The Storm also had two key interceptions at the end of the third quarter and the very beginning of the fourth quarter, both by Erick McIntosh. Dietz, on the other hand, completed 22 of 29 passes for seven touchdowns.
The Storm was led in receiving by Tyrone Timmons’ six catches for three touchdowns. Sedrick Robinson snagged seven balls for 87 yards and two scores. DeAndrew Rubin and Hank Edwards each had a touchdown reception for the game. Eric Ortiz had two touchdown rushes in the game, both of which were on short runs inside the three yard line.
Tulsa was paced by Donovan Morgan’s four touchdown catches as he amassed 63 receiving yards. Carlese Franklin hauled in eight passes one for a touchdown for 121 yards. Jeff Hughley caught the last of Allgood’s six touchdown throws.
Tulsa’s first AFL season comes to a close as they finish the season 10-7. Tulsa suffered their worst loss in any game since falling to Oklahoma City 90-54 in May of 2006. Tampa Bay improves to 12-5 for the year and continues their march to ArenaBowl XXIII as they will face the Orlando Predators next weekend in the American Conference Championship.

TALONS BATTLE TAMPA BAY IN 1ST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS Posted: 8/5/2010 10:32:03 AM
The Tulsa Talons, the most winning team in af2 history will take on the Tampa Bay Storm, five-time Arena Bowl champions Saturday night at the BOK Center at 7pm in the 1st round of the 2010 AFL playoffs. This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Talons won the 1st contest by a score of 69-58 in week one of the regular season.
The Talons are entering the playoffs for the 11th straight season (qualifying all 11 years in franchise history) and are coming off their 9th straight division title. The Talons finished the regular season with the 2nd best offense in the league averaging 62.1 points per game. The offense will need to be firing on all cylinders as they will be facing the league’s 2nd stingiest defense. The Storm gave up just 50.8 points per game during the regular season.
The Talons’ offense put up some lofty numbers this season in large part due to its balance. Talons’ QB Justin Allgood led the AFL in touchdown passes with 109 (breaking his franchise record of 108), Donovan Morgan led the AFL in touchdown receptions with 52, Odie Armstrong led the AFL in rushing with 349 yards and all three wide receivers eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark in receiving.
On the other side of the ball for each team, the Storm averaged 57.9 points per game offensively led by their QB Brett Dietz who threw for 106 touchdown passes. The Talons who gave up 56.2 points per game on defense were led by Gabe Nyenhuis who led the AFL in forced fumbles and sacks and Jamar Ransom who led the Talons with 92 tackles .
On paper the two teams are evenly matched. The game will be decided by which team can protect their quarterback and which team has the fewest turnovers.

Talons Take Season Finale in OKC, Move on to Playoffs
The Tulsa Talons finished off the regular season with a 74-61 road victory over the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz at the Cox Convention Center Friday night. The night was highlighted by an outstanding performance from quarterback Justin Allgood, who threw 10 touchdown passes to give the Talons momentum as they move on to the playoffs next week. The Talons held the lead for most of the game and never trailed in the contest, but Oklahoma City refused to quit and made it very interesting in the fourth quarter.
An interception by the Yard Dawgz’s Kevin McCullough with 2:30 to play led to a 13-yard touchdown run for Oklahoma City quarterback Tommy Grady, which cut the lead to seven points at 68-61, the closest margin since a tie early in the first quarter. The ensuing onside kick went out of bounds giving way to an Allgood touchdown pass to Donovan Morgan. The Tulsa defense sealed the game with a Chris Royal interception at the goal line allowing the offense to run out the clock.
The Talons went to work early in the first quarter with Terrance Carter forcing a fumble on the Yard Dawgz’s first possession. That set up Allgood’s first touchdown pass of the game to Morgan, who caught five touchdown passes on the day. This score set up a trend as Tulsa scored first in every quarter of the game.
Tulsa scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Hughley moving their lead to eight points. Two plays later the Talons opened up their first multi-score lead of the game on a Jamar Ransom interception return for a touchdown. The interception was set up by pressure from defensive linemen Terrance Carter and Gabe Nyenhuis.
The rest of the second quarter and the third quarter featured back and forth scoring from both teams. The Yard Dawgz never came within eight points until Allgood’s fourth quarter interception and the resulting score cut the lead to seven points.
Leading Tulsa’s receivers was Jeff Hughley who caught 10 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Donovan Morgan chipped in seven catches for 43 yards and five scores. Carlese Franklin hauled in six balls for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Newcomer Collin Taylor caught one touchdown pass on his two receptions in the game. The Talons defense was led by Ronnie Amadi who had 8 tackles. Terrance Carter had the lone Talons’ sack for the game.
Tulsa improves to 10-6 and finishes as the number 2 seed in the American Conference. The Talons roll on to the playoffs on Saturday, August 7th with a matchup against the Tampa Bay Storm at the BOK Center. This will be the second tilt between the two teams this season with the first being a Talons victory, 69-58, at the BOK Center on April 3rd. Be sure to support your Tulsa Talons as they begin their campaign to take their first AFL championship.

TALONS FALL TO ARIZONA Posted: 7/26/2010 9:09:54 AM
A pair of turnovers early in the fourth quarter sunk the Talons as they fell to the Arizona Rattlers at the BOK Center on Saturday evening. A Justin Allgood fumble with 12 minutes to play set up a Nick Davila touchdown pass to J.J. McKelvey. The Talons then turned the ball over on downs on their next possession giving the Rattlers the ball at the 3 yard line allowing for another Davila pass this time to Rod Windsor for a score. The Talons were down 10 points with 7:43 to play and were never able to recover. Jamar Ransom did pull the Talons to within 3 points on a 1 yard touchdown run with 4 minutes to go, but a Rattlers touchdown and an Allgood interception halted the chances for another dramatic comeback. The fourth quarter saw the Talons outscored 21-7 in what was a very close ball game for the first 45 minutes.
The first quarter was a back and forth battle between the Talons and Rattlers. The Talons got touchdowns from Donovan Morgan on a 4 yard pass and Carlese Franklin who muscled his way across the goal line for the score. Justin Allgood finished the first quarter completing 5 of 7 passes for 59 yards. The score at the end of the quarter was tied at 13 as Nick Davila tossed two touchdown passes.
The Talons opening drive of the second quarter was riddled with mistakes and dropped passes, but a huge catch over the middle by Morgan on second and long set up a Marco Capozzoli field goal putting the Tulsa ahead by 3. The Rattlers struck back quickly with a 39 yard pass from Davila to Trandon Harvey a mere 1:40 after the Talons’ field goal. The Talons worked their way back into the lead with a 6 play drive capped off by a one-handed Morgan catch in the back corner of the end zone. However, the lead was short lived as Arizona fullback Johnie Kirton pushed over the goal line from 1 yard out.
Two fantastic heads up plays capped off the first half for Tulsa. The first came when the Rattlers attempted an onside kick, which was recovered and returned by Terrell Mingo to the Arizona 1 yard line. That play set up a Jeff Hughley touchdown reception. The second play came on Arizona’s ensuing drive. Excellent coverage by Jamar Ransom over the middle set up a Chris Royal interception. His return came up just short of the end zone as the half expired. The Talons went into the locker room with the lead 30-26.
The third quarter followed a similar format as the previous two quarters as the Talons and Rattlers exchanged touchdowns. Royal started the second half in the same way that he ended the first half by intercepting a Davila pass intended for Harvey. That interception set up an Allgood 2 yard touchdown run with a little less than 11 minutes left in the third quarter. With the Talons up by 11 points the Rattlers battled back with another Davila touchdown pass to Rod Windsor, who scored three touchdowns in the game. The following possession resulted in a fumble recovery in the end zone by Rattlers linebacker Kelvin Morris putting the visitors up by three points. The Talons did score again in the third quarter on a touchdown pass from Justin Allgood to Carlese Franklin who went for two scores in the game. The Talons were up 44-40 going into the fourth quarter.
Leading the Talons in receiving was Carlese Franklin who caught six passes for 89 yards. Jeff Hughley caught seven balls for 39 yards and one touchdown. Donovan Morgan added six catches for 43 yards and two scores. Justin Allgood was able to throw five touchdown passes on 20 completions in 36 attempts on top of his 2 yard touchdown run. He reached a career milestone as a Talon in the game as he needed just four touchdown passes to reach 300 for his Talons career.
Tulsa moves to 9-6 on the season having already locked up a playoff spot and a Southwest Division championship. They go on the road to arch-rival Oklahoma City on July 30th in the regular season finale. Additionally, the Talons will have another home game as the first round of the AFL playoffs will be held on August 7th. The opponent is still to be determined.

TALONS ROUT BATTLE WINGS Posted: 7/12/2010 9:41:15 AM
Story written by Corinne Meyerson
The Talons made it a baker’s dozen of wins in their all-time record
(13-2) against rival Bossier-Shreveport Saturday night at the BOK
Center.
Donovan Morgan had five touchdowns, and accumulated 180 yards, to help
the Talons to the 74-45 blowout.
The Talons took a lead late in the first quarter and never relinquished
it as they improved to 8-5.
Justin Allgood was 15-for-25 and threw for 223 yards and seven
touchdowns. Michael Potts came in and did a respectable job, completing
3 of 4 passes for 2 touchdowns and 69 yards.
“It was good to see that Potts came in and did a good job,” Allgood
said.
Head coach Mitch Allner said he was obviously happy with the outcome of
the game but said the team still needs to start off strong and play a
full four quarters to have future success.
“The first half, defensively we gave up a lot more things than I wanted
to,” Allner said. “It was very up and down. We got some things figured
out at half time. We’ve always talked about playing four quarters and
we only played two tonight."
The Talons certainly did figure it out on defense in the second half.
Chris Royal intercepted two passes, both resulting in touchdowns, and
remainined the team leader with seven interceptions.
In the third quarter, Bossier-Shreveport quarterback Jimmy Welker was
sacked and Gabe Nyenhuis caused a fumble in the end zone which was
recovered by Adam Huebner for the touchdown.
The Talons kept the BattleWings scoreless in the third quarter, an
impressive accomplishment, but an expectation to Talon players.
“It’s what we expect,” linebacker Steve Watson said. “I don’t think we
really came out and played the way we expect to in the first half and we
came out in the second half with a little fire under our behinds and
played the way we should have been.”
In the last meeting between the teams, the final score was 52-48, with
Royal making an interception with 13 seconds left to secure the win.
Allner said they were happy this game left no questions that may have
been lingering after the last matchup, even though at halftime it may
have seemed like a similar outcome was in sight.
“It wasn’t quite as dramatic,” Allner said. “We didn’t have to come up
with that big play at the end but at halftime it was a three-point ball
game. Bossier did a good job of fighting in the first half and keeping
it close.”
Carlese Franklin added three touchdowns and Odie Armstrong had one as
well, and also surpassed the franchise record for rushing yards.
The Talons said they have momentum as they head to Alabama to play the
Vipers at 8:30 p.m. next Saturday.
“This weekend going down to Alabama, it’s going to be tough,” Allner
said. “It’s a very difficult place to play out, a very loud crowd.
Just get back to work and get ready to play on Saturday.”

RANSOM HONORED WITH AFL HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK Posted: 6/29/2010 2:14:57 PM
Talons’ linebacker Jamar Ransom was recognized by the AFL today with the Spalding highlight of the week. Ransom intercepted Cleveland quarterback John Dutton just before halftime of last Saturday’s game and raced 43 yards for a touchdown to give the Talons their 1st lead of the game. It was a lead the Talons would never relinquish as they went on to defeat the Gladiators 65-44.
The interception was the turning point in what had been a closely contested affair. It was Ransom’s fourth interception of the season to go along with four unassisted tackles giving the speedy linebacker 74 tackles on the season.
The Talons have a bye this week, but return to the BOK Center Saturday, July 10th to take on divisional rival, the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings at 7pm. It is tackle cancer night with a portion of some ticket sales raised being donated to help fight cancer.

Talons beat Cleveland Gladiators Posted: 6/28/2010 10:56:43 AM

Terrell Mingo and Jamar Ransom intercepted passes and the Talons pressured Cleveland quarterback John Dutton all night, paving the way to a 65-44 win over the Gladiators before an estimated 5,800 spectators at the BOK Center.
"You see what happens when we put four quarters together," said Ransom, whose interception turned the game around in the second quarter.
Until then, the high-scoring Gladiators (5-7) seemed to have the Talons on the ropes. Cleveland led 21-20 and was headed for another score when Dutton's pass popped out of Chris Johnson's hands and directly to Ransom, who raced 47 yards the other direction, the fourth-longest interception return in franchise history.
Jeff Hughley's 2-point conversion run made it 28-21 and the Talons stretched the lead when Mingo intercepted and returned 24 yards on the next possession, setting up Justin Allgood's 7-yard TD pass to Donovan Morgan 12 seconds before halftime.
Cleveland ended the half with a 39-yard Matt Denny field goal and scored the first points of the third quarter, but Tulsa unloaded 30 unanswered points to put the game out of reach, leading 65-30 with 3:37 left.
The Talons improved to 7-5 while avenging an earlier 68-55 loss to the Gladiators in Cleveland. Tulsa maintained its 2 1/2-game Southwest Division lead over Oklahoma City and avoided consecutive home losses for the first time in 10 years. A loss to Orlando on June 5 was its first at the BOK Center in 15 games since moving into the new facility in 2009.
"I told the guys I hated to say Game 12 is a must-win situation, but we needed this one," Talons head coach Mitch Allner said. "We needed not only to win but to play well and I think we did that. The defense was great. We had great pressure on Dutton."
The Talons were credited with only one sack, but they had five tackles for loss and fell on Dutton, the AFL's leading passer, like an avalanche in the third quarter. Dutton unloaded the ball from the end zone to no one in particular, resulting in a safety when he was called for intentional grounding.
Over their previous eight games, the Gladiators averaged 63.5 points. Their 44 points against the Talons equaled a season low, and the total easily could have been 30. Their final two TDs came after the issue was decided.
Allgood threw four TD passes and Odie Armstrong had three rushing scores, giving him 12 on the season. Donovan Morgan had two receiving TDs and Jeff Hughley and Carlese Franklin had one each.
Hughley scored his 150th Talons career TD on a 17-yard pass from Allgood in the second quarter. Morgan moved into second place in Talons career receiving yards with a 16-yard catch in the second quarter.
The win sent the Talons into their second bye week of the season. They return to host Bossier-Shreveport on July 10.

TALONS SEEKING SERIES SWEEP IN DALLAS Posted: 6/10/2010 3:36:02 PM
The Talons travel to Dallas to take on the Vigilantes this Friday night. Tulsa will be looking to get back on the winning track after suffering their 1st loss ever in the BOK Center last Saturday to Orlando.
This will be the second meeting between these divisional rivals. The Talons beat the Vigilantes in week 2 of the season 63-59 in one of the most exciting finishes in franchise history.
Despite their record, Dallas is a very dangerous opponent as they boast one of the league’s best rosters on paper. However, that talent has not yet transferred onto the field and resulted in wins. The Vigilantes who average 53.3 points per game scored are lead by Kenny Henderson. Henderson leads the AFL in all-purpose yards with 1746 (1142 on kick returns and 604 receiving) on the season.
After giving up two kick returns for touchdowns in their last game, the Talons special teams will need to correct the mistakes they made last Saturday if they hope to keep Henderson in check.
In the last few games the Talons have been lead by their defense, which is a role reversal from the start of the season. The defense has given up only 48 points per game over the last three games compared to the 64 points per game to start the season. Conversely, the offense has sputtered of late averaging 57 points per game over the last 3 games compared to the 69 points per game to begin the season.
The Talons return home to the BOK Center Saturday, June 26 when they take on the Cleveland Gladiators. It is News on 6 & Tulsa CW Guy’s Night. All guys will get 2 for 1 tickets courtesy of Arby’s. Guys will also have the opportunity to register for all kinds of prizes including a new recliner from Mathis Brothers. Call the Talons office at 294-1000 to get your ticket today.
TALONS FALL TO 7TH IN COACHES POLL Posted: 6/9/2010 4:51:34 PM
The Tulsa Talons fell two spots in this week’s Coaches Poll after suffering their 1st ever loss in the BOK Center 57-54 to the Orlando Predators. The Talons had won 14 games in a row at home dating back to the start of the 2009 season. The Talons twice had the opportunity to take a two score lead in the game, but both times turned the ball over. In the end, four Talons’ turnovers sealed their fate in the game.
The Talons travel to Dallas to take on the Vigilantes at American Airlines Center this Friday at 7:30. This will be the 2nd and last regular season meeting between the two teams. Tulsa beat the Dallas 63-59 in week two of the season.
